Patients First Network (http://www.spuc.org.uk/about/pfn)
Patients First Network is a new organisation which helps to protect elderly and vulnerable people at risk from euthanasia by neglect, and which supports their family, friends and carers. PFN has been developed by SPUC in response to the growing number of calls from people worried about how a mentally incapacitated loved one is being treated by medical staff. Often, the medical care system strives to withdraw assisted food and fluids and leave the patient to die of dehydration and starvation. The practice of euthanasia by omission was enshrined into law in this country on 5 April, 2005. PFN offers you the opportunity to subscribe to a Statement of Medical Care Principles which enables you to let doctors, nurses, and other medical care workers know how you expect to be treated if you are critically ill and no longer able to communicate yourself. If you look after a vulnerable relative or friend, PFN supports you so that you can get good medical care for that person who is in a critical condition. PFN operates a confidential telephone support service, which is available to everyone- 0800 1691719.
